Figuring Out A Leash For Your Pup?

So you're looking for a leash for your new puppy, but aren't sure which is the best for your pup?

When choosing a collars or leashes for your dog, make sure you understand what kind of dog your dealing with and what behavior they've exhibited to you so far. Collars and leashes are differentiated between controlling bad behavior and for better control for dogs that pull.

When first adopting Sam, we opted for a general harness and a standard fabric leash, as seen below:

The reason we chose a harness over a collar, is because, Sam is still dealing with pulling behavior , and because she is still a growing pup, we were afraid that a leash attached to just a collar would eventually bring strain to her neck.

However, as clearly seen in the photo, both the leash and the harness did not last too long. Sam is a very active, Australian Kelpie puppy and the brand new leash and harness had quickly became torn, thanks to Sam's hyperactive behavior.

Also, while walking Sam, we found ourselves wrapping the leash around our hands, which made it very difficult when trying to correct her leash tugging behavior. As a result, we opted for a much sturdier harness, as pictured below:

With this new harness, the option to tighten the harness around Sam's body and neck, helped to keep the harness secure and to avoid slipping. Sam, is a very flexible dog, and if not secured tightly on her body, it is very easy for her to escape her clothing.

When looking for a new leash, the best option we opted for was a retractable leash, and it has been the best choice of leash so far! We've been able to control Sam's pulling far more effectively, and it is just so much easier to use.

Overall, I'd recommend that you take a good look of how your dog behaves, when choosing a leash.
